Interrupt Your Thinking to Feel Better

Have you ever noticed that when you aren't paying attention, your mind will conjure up lots of things you should have done differently in the past or worry about in the future? One of the best things you can do to counteract these narratives is to identify it when it's happening. This interrupts your thinking and brings you back into the present moment. It also gives you the opportunity to reflect on if it is true and to replace it with a positive thought.

Take it to the next level and give yourself visual cues of when to check in on the quality of your mental chatter. Recently, I realized that I like to do this while walking up stairs or riding an elevator and I thought you might benefit from it too.

Repeat a positive phrase to yourself on every step.

Here's how it works:

  1. Enter an elevator or stairwell.

  2. Check in and notice your current thought.

  3. Repeat a positive thought until the elevator ride is over or you've reached the end of the stairwell.

  4. Notice how you feel after the exercise.

Work with these thoughts to increase your peace of mind:

  • I love you. I love you. I love you.

  • Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  • I am very happy.

  • I approve of myself.

  • Everything is working out for me.

Which positive phrase makes you feel the best? Repeat it often to yourself this week and enjoy the interruption!
